TRANSITIONAL PASTOR JOB DESCRIPTION
Leverington Church is seeking a full-time, experienced Transitional Pastor to guide and prepare our staff and congregation for new pastoral leadership. The Transitional Pastor has the potential to become the permanent installed pastor.
Purpose
The Transitional Pastor will help shape and guide Leverington into a new season of ministry. This position is for a God-led, scripturally based, experienced Transitional Pastor who is committed to God’s Word and leading and will enable us to continue building a niche for those seeking a more intimate worship environment by developing impactful sermons and worship experiences that deeply connect with and challenge our congregation. He/she will mentor our faith community’s spiritual leaders, shape our discipleship pathways consistent with our church’s vision and values, and guide our outreach efforts in reaching out to the Roxborough/Manayunk and surrounding communities of Philadelphia and its suburbs.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and deliver engaging and doctrinally sound sermons that resonate with and challenge the congregation, integrating into our current worship style and technology.
- Administer the sacraments of baptism and communion and officiate at weddings and funeral services.
- Lead the worship committee in developing and overseeing cohesive, impactful, high quality worship experiences.
- Develop a system for feedback and evaluation of worship services to ensure they meet the spiritual needs of the congregation and align with the church’s vision.
- Provide leadership and support to church staff and volunteers, fostering their spiritual growth and development.
- Offer pastoral care and counseling members as needed, including visitations, prayer, and guidance.
- Work with volunteer ministry leads creating pathways to serving, coordinating communication to lift up volunteer needs and track needs throughout the church.
- Lead the Outreach Committee in the strategic planning and development of events that encourage the congregation into opportunities for service and connection.
- Design and implement a discipleship pathway that invites people to encounter Jesus, become like Jesus, and do what He did.
- Encourage the development of small groups, oversee the recruitment and training of group leaders, the communication around signups, and choosing appropriate curriculums that align with the church’s vision.
- Moderate Session and Congregational Meetings.
- Attend staff meetings, planning sessions, and church events.
- Lead the church’s strategic planning and vision setting.
- Work with Session to develop a regular progress/assessment reporting system.
- Competent in computer skills and social media platforms, along with a strong comfort level working in front of a camera.
- Work with the Office Administrator to manage and develop our communication pipelines (social media, YouTube channel, website, emails, digital and printed materials, etc.).
- Perform other duties as required supporting the overall mission of the church.

- Meets the biblical qualifications laid out in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. Mainly:
- Holds fast to Biblical teaching
- Above reproach, having a good reputation outside the church
- Faithful to their spouse or celibate in singleness
- Is a person of peace
- Not a recent convert to Christianity
- Loves what is good
- Is sensible, just, devout, and self-controlled
- Additionally, the ideal candidate will exhibit the following character traits consistent with Scripture:
- Relational – able to converse and show interest in people from different educational, occupational, economic, and cultural backgrounds (Col. 3:12-13)
- Spiritually Mature – able to live according to the Scriptures, reasoning, teaching with great care for the individual (Jam. 1:5)
- Listener – showing a genuine connection with others by desiring to understand their point of view (Prov. 19:20)
- Biblically Educated – either formally or informally, to show a high view of the knowledge and use of Scripture (2 Tim. 3:16)
- Collaborative – seeking the views of others (Ecc. 4:9-10)
- Emotionally Healthy / Adaptive – balanced and appropriate use of various emotions (Ecc. 3:4)
- Organized – bringing order to work and activities (1 Cor. 14:40)
- Transparent – simply meaning what is spoken (James 5:12)
- Humble – having a modest opinion of one’s own value (Prov. 15:33)
Review and Accountability
The Transitional Pastor will be a member of the Presbytery of Philadelphia or be granted permission to fill the position within the bounds of the Presbytery of Philadelphia and approved by the Committee on Ministry (COM). The Transitional Pastor is accountable to the congregation of Leverington (represented by the Session) for the fulfillment of the responsibilities of the position description and to the Presbytery of Philadelphia through the COM. They will report to the Session and will lead with the Worship Committee Session Chair to attain impactful worship.
Term
The Transitional Pastor shall be invited to serve at the request of the Session and with the approval of the Presbytery through the COM for a term that is expected to continue until a permanent pastor is called. The Transitional Pastor contract shall be terminated upon the effective date of the call of the new pastor and may be terminated by either the Session or the Transitional Pastor with thirty days written notice. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Benefits package will be offered in accordance with Presbytery guidelines.
Professional Qualifications • Ordained by the Presbyterian Church USA with a strong Biblical and Reformed theological foundation. • 7+ years of ministry experience in multigenerational, multiethnic churches. • Graduate of a nationally recognized seminary or divinity school. • Completion of transitional ministry training. • Experienced in leading a church through the transition process. • A demonstrated ability for teaching and preaching emphasizing spiritual formation. • Direct experience with developing and overseeing staff and volunteer leaders for the work of ministry in line with Eph. 4:11-13. • Effective interpersonal and communication skills with the flexibility to relate to members from a wide range of ages and with differing needs, views and desires.
