Job Description
Position Calling: St. Mark’s United Methodist Church is seeking someone to answer Christ’s call to Student and Recreation ministry. The Director should strive to create a place for people to belong with a goal of making disciples for Christ. This person should be warm, inviting and engaging to students and their families. This person should be collaborative, organized and be able to effectively communicate.
Responsibilities: (% expected)
Youth Ministries: 70%
1. To develop, explain and implement a comprehensive model of ministry for the Student Ministry program that includes but is not limited to Sunday School, Sunday night programming and Wednesday night programming.
2. Facilitate and guide the Student Council, developing leadership in students at St. Mark’s.
3. Encourage and nurture students and their families in the Wesleyan understanding of Christian faith and living.
4. Create and foster opportunities for spiritual discussion and discourse.
5. Minister to parents of students.
6. Plan, implement, and coordinate student mission trips, retreats, and various other activities. Example: meet with other United Methodist student groups, one day excursions, summer mission trip, fall retreat, winter retreat, conference student ministry events etc.
7. Encourage student participation in all church activities, cross-generational connections, and integration with other ministries of St. Mark’s
8. Mentor and provide direction and spiritual growth to summer interns and Student Ministry volunteers.
9. Oversee transition of 6th grade students to Student Ministry through Confirmation in collaboration with the Director of Children’s Ministries.
College Ministries: 15%
1. Lead and coordinate with the College Ministry Team to provide ministry with local college students.
2. Provide support and care for graduates of St. Mark’s Student Ministries.
Recreation Ministries: 15%
1. Schedule requested activities requiring use of St. Mark’s recreation facilities and supplies.
2. Lead and coordinate with the Recreation Ministry Team to offer church-wide recreational activities.
Administrative Responsibilities
1. Provide a calendar of events for work areas and staff on a regular basis in a timely fashion.
2. Effectively communicate with staff, students and parents, and ministry volunteers through various communication platforms.
3. Develop and maintain program budgets and manage fundraising campaigns as needed.
4. Support students’ school activities, sports, and events.
5. Recruitment of ministry volunteers and teachers.
6. Coordinate with the Director of Music and Worship for SonLight choir schedule.
7. Adhere to all Safe Sanctuaries policy and procedures and contribute to the annual review.
8. Perform other related duties as may be requested or required by the Senior Pastor
Qualifications: The Director of Student and Recreation Ministries must have a sense of calling and passion for ministry with students that is grounded in an understanding and appreciation of Methodist theology. This person should have experience in student ministry and possess good communication skills with students and adults. The director should be goal- oriented, self-directed, and self-motivated and should serve as a role model to the students and other adults. This person must see this position as an opportunity to develop Christian faith and integrate students into the broader ministries of the United Methodist Church.
Specific qualifications include:
1. A bachelor’s degree is required, student ministry leadership is expected.
2. Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills.
3. An ability to identify and foster leadership in adults and youth.
4. A desire to be a team player that works well with other staff.
5. An aptitude for spiritual, emotional, social, and physical wellness.
6. An attitude of flexibility and adaptability in the face of changing moods, plans, and directions common to working in a church.
7. A resilient and persevering spirit that is not easily discouraged or frustrated.
8. A desire to seek opportunities for students to grow personally and spiritually.
9. A good sense of humor and an energetic personality.
10. Important to be part of the church and the local community.
