Job Description
Theological:
• The absolute centrality of the ministry of God’s Word and God’s Holy Sacraments. All church activities and programs must be in service to this grace. The preaching pastor is not an administrator. He is not the “paid” guy to make things happen. He is the guy called to an office, to preach and teach, and administer the sacraments and then get out of the way and let God’s Holy Spirit do his work.
• All Scripture is Eschatological. From Genesis to Revelation redemptive history was pointing us forward. Every page of Holy Scripture “is about me,” Jesus said. Therefore, all preaching must be about him, too.
• With an emphasis on the two-age structure, we recognize that the heavenly reality is ours to partake in right now. As a consequence, focusing on cultural and social issues distracts us from the mission of the church.
• We appreciate and believe in the indicative and imperative in all preaching, allowing the Spirit to work in the hearer’s heart and mind on the imperative. In other words, we do not need practical application every week. The indicative and imperative formulation also protects God’s people from preachers going off in any number of hobby horse directions.
• PWPC expects to hear the words “suffering then glory” many times because this is the message we received from our Lord to follow in his footsteps.
• The PWPC philosophy of ministry is a simple one: “Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy.”
• We need to be reminded continually that our lives are to be lived as Life under the Cross. Sacrificing to meet the needs of others is the new ethic into which we live and move and have our being.
• We look for an emphasis on biblical theology in the tradition of Vos, Kline, Gordon and Beale, but there is no need to shy away from other biblical scholars in that discipline who are non-reformed. Total agreement is not necessary to find value in the work of the larger body of Christ.
We are also looking for:
• A man with the gift of public speaking who can give a well-organized and interesting presentation
• A skilled preacher who is able to unfold the word of God in a calm, conversational, humble manner
• Someone who has a teachable demeanor and a strong communication skill potential
• A teacher who is able to teach all age levels
• Someone to be the primary teacher for the adult Sunday School class and teach an occasional Bible study series
• Someone who is proficient in Greek and Hebrew
• Someone who preaches expositional series with the occasional topical series
• A shepherd to the flock
Miscellaneous:
• Our practice is to observe the Lord’s Supper weekly. The table is fenced by a word of caution during the table address.
• We hold to the Regulative Principle of Worship.
• We are truly a regional church body, gathering folks from all over the metro. We need someone who is adaptable to our existing congregation with a desire to excel in Biblical theology through preaching and teaching.
• We’re looking for a candidate who can “pick up the ball and run with it.”
