Pastor Position Description
Purpose: To provide spiritual leadership, pastoral care, administrative oversight, and organizational direction to a
congregation with a broad program of worship, music, preaching, teaching, and fellowship.
Accountability: Accountable to the presbytery and to the session through the Personnel Committee.
Responsibilities:
Worship: Preach, lead worship, and provide a teaching ministry to foster the congregation’s spiritual growth and
encourage active outreach to the local community. This encompasses planning and conducting worship services,
including music, sermons, and administration of sacraments, as well as leading special services to facilitate spiritual development for both the congregation and visitors.
Christian Education: Provide for the study of the Scripture, God’s Word to us in Jesus Christ, and the church’s history and doctrine through various teaching opportunities that engage and strengthen the congregation and visitors in their spiritual growth so that they may effectively witness and serve.
Administration: In collaboration with the session, initiate, develop, and implement effective programs to provide ongoing strategic and tactical support for the church. Develop annual work plans in support of goals and objectives. Provide fiscal oversight and effective implementation of budgets and expenditures. Adopt a leadership role to organize and implement annual stewardship giving. Ensure accurate records of all transactions of the session and preservation of church records.
Congregational Care: Contribution to the religious and secular life of the congregation. Contribution to the actual growth of the congregation. Ensure the care and connection of the congregation from first-time visit to newcomer assimilation through involvement and participation in the Christian community. Ensure effective use of congregational communication systems. Tend to the needs of members throughout their life journey.
Service and Missions: Respond to the needs of the membership and community. Build relationships with strategic partners to maximize missional impact. Promote denominational offerings. Encourage every member to be involved in service. Act as liaison to the Clifton Ministerial Alliance.
Fellowship: Promote and strengthen the feeling of acceptance and Christian community for members, prospective members, and friends of the congregation. Develop, plan and execute events appropriate to engage members and others in a communal life of support and encouragement.
Property and Grounds: Oversee the processes of maintaining the grounds, building, lighting, heating/cooling, sound system, and all equipment in viable condition. Ensure the effective scheduling of the facility’s maintenance and guidelines for use. Provide input on the investment budget to ensure a viable mission facility.
Communication: Provide centralized communication for the church to the staff, congregation, and public for any external communications. Ensure that messaging, marketing, and church communication channels effectively reach both the membership and community in a manner that promotes FPC ministry and vision.
Working Relationships: Maintain and strengthen denomination linkage with the Presbytery and the ECO national
gathering as a member. Demonstrate experience and skills in organizational leadership to the session and various
committees as the moderator, the staff as head of staff, and the congregation as pastor. Demonstrate attention to
relationships through appropriate listening, responsiveness, and comfort with emotions and feelings.
Planning and Coordinating: Establish short and long-term plans to meet current and future needs. Demonstrate effective time management and supervisory skills. Session, Volunteer, and Staff Leadership: Serve as moderator of the session and congregational meetings. Educate and empower elders to lead the work to set and accomplish organizational goals. Lead and/or participate in the recruitment, development, and feedback of church staff.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Master’s degree from an accredited theological seminary in biblical or theological studies or completion of commissioned lay pastor training
• Ordained or eligible and willing to be ordained in ECO or be received as an affiliate pastor by the local ECO presbytery
• Four or more years of experience in a church leadership position or relevant experience managing staff or volunteers
Employee Classification:
Full time, 40 hours per week
Total Compensation Package: commensurate with experience
