    Job Description

    The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) position with the Mill Neck Foundation is a unique opportunity for a strategic leader who brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm for enriching the lives of individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. It is Mill Neck’s intent, in collaboration with their community, to amplify the organizations’ regional reputation as a recognized leader on Long Island in education and adult service for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals, their national recognition as the top organization in Deaf ministries for LCMS and their international leadership role on the development of Deaf ministry programs and services from China to Ethiopia.

    Together, the Mill Neck Family of Organizations has touched the lives of thousands over the past year with notable accomplishments including:

    • The Mill Neck Interpreter Service offered interpreters 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout Long Island and the NY metropolitan area
    • The Center for Hearing Health provided free hearing screenings to almost 1,000 people and held 47 free events
    • The Lutheran Friends of the Deaf taught 40 children American Sign Language during their Sign Language Camp
    • Mill Neck International reached the Deaf community in ten countries
    • Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf served 140 students, in 39 school districts, whose families speak fourteen different languages
    • Mill Neck Services placed 32 Deaf adults in meaningful work positions
    • Mill Neck Foundation awarded six grants to fund projects and organizations worldwide that aligned with the Mill Neck Family of Companies’ mission
    • Mill Neck Manor hosted four large-scale community events and various tours which attracted more than 20,000 participants. These important events were made possible through the volunteerism of 315 individuals.

    THE FAMILY OF ORGANIZATIONS

    Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf: Established in 1951, Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf offers a full range of comprehensive and support services for children who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing and have other disabilities from infancy to adulthood. Mill Neck’s specially trained staff, carefully structured programs and access to the newest technologies give students the academic knowledge and confidence they need to be successful both in and out of the classroom.

    Mill Neck Services:
    Mill Neck Services allows Deaf and multiply disabled adults the same access to employment and community services as their non-disabled peers with services and programs like job development and career training, supportive living and community socialization.

    Mill Neck Interpreting:
    For more than 25 years, businesses and organizations have chosen Mill Neck Interpreter Service—a non-profit agency comprised of the industry’s leading American Sign Language interpreters and Deaf Sign Language interpreters. Available in person, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community throughout Long Island and the Metropolitan area, our ASL interpreters are professional, accurate and reliable.

    The Center for Hearing and Health (CHH)
    CHH provides quality audiological services to children and adults in communities across Long Island, including infant/ pediatric testing, adult testing and community screenings. Other services include hearing aid evaluations, dispensing of hearing aids, custom ear molds and swim molds and assistive listening devices. CHH also offers mobile audiological services to companies and organizations on Long Island.

    Mill Neck Foundation
    Mill Neck Foundation supports educational and evangelistic outreach to Deaf individuals around the world.

    Lutheran Friends of the Deaf (LFD):
    The founding organization of the Mill Neck Family of Organizations, Lutheran Friends of the Deaf carries out the mission of creating faith and bringing hope into the lives of the Deaf who do not have access to the Word of God— not only locally, but around the world. LFD also assists partnered churches to deliver God’s Word in Sign Language, allowing the Deaf community to serve others and spread the news of the wonderful things God has bestowed upon them.

    Mill Neck International:
    Mill Neck International (MNI) aims to be the organization that people will turn to for information and assistance with Deaf people in developing countries. MNI paves the way for others through their experience and knowledge in working with partners overseas. MNI’s mission is to collaborate with partners to mobilize the capabilities, skills and resources of and for Deaf communities worldwide to achieve their human rights to access effective communication and education for living and sustaining independent, productive and meaningful lives.

    Mill Neck Manor:
    Mill Neck Manor wishes to use the beauty of this historic home to benefit the Mill Neck Family of Organizations’ mission to serve Deaf and Hard of Hearing children and adults, as well as the community at large, through special events, tours, photography shoots, movie/tv filming, meetings and more.

    ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

    In accordance with the Mill Neck Family of Organization’s powerful mission, vision, and values, the next President & CEO will work collaboratively with the Board of Trustees, management team, and staff to preserve the rich legacy and continued innovation, growth, and success of the Family of Organizations. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing inspirational leadership to the organization to ensure the organization is a leading provider of quality education, care, and services to Deaf and Hard of Hearing children, youth, adults, and their families regionally, nationally and internationally.

    Primary duties and responsibilities include:

    Leadership and Management
    o Communicate a clear vision and actionable strategic plan for the Mill Neck Family of Organizations that is compelling, widely supported, and effectively implemented.
    o Evaluate the current services, offerings, and operations. Develop and implement creative and innovative plans to improve fiscal health in alignment with the Family of Organization’s mission.
    o Ensure a strong and collaborative working relationship with the Mill Neck Family of Organizations’ leadership.
    o Bring energy and enthusiasm to the Mill Neck Family of Organization’s work environment that empowers others and leverages the strengths of the faculty and program staff while developing rising talent for future leadership.
    o Encourage diversity and inclusion in the recruitment and retention of employees, board members, and with the communities served.

    Fundraising and External Relations
    o Serve as the Mill Neck Foundation’s chief fundraiser; create a strategy and engage individual, corporate and foundation donors to increase contributed revenue. Major gifts, endowment and capital campaign experience a plus. o Expand community partnerships to strengthen the organization’s image and brand.
    o Serve as the public face and official spokesperson of the Mill Neck Family of Organizations; promote the mission and services to all constituencies, the general public, and the media.

    Operations
    o Maintain a well-functioning, efficient organization through strong management, fiscal responsibility, budget management, effective communications and team building. Develop measurable goals and objectives around infrastructure of systems, processes and personnel designed to enable the Family of Organizations’ growth.
    o Retain existing contracts/revenue and identify new revenue opportunities that support the mission and success of the Family of Organizations.
    o Knowledge or willingness to learn NY State Educational Law as well as LCMS RSO rules and regulations.
    o Create business plans to address proposed program expansion or implementation.
    o Oversee the ongoing planning, maintenance, and updating of information systems and infrastructure, including hardware and software, and all facilities.
    o Evaluate ongoing risk and security threats and ensure proper measures and plans are in place.

    Board of Trustees
    o Maintain a transparent relationship with the Board, and work collaboratively with Board members to set Mill Neck’s strategic direction and policies, enabling the organization to adapt to a constantly changing external environment.
    o Recruit new board members to balance perspectives and voices that are represented, and oversee onboarding process.
    o Keep the Board informed of progress, activities, and challenges. Provide accurate monthly reports and annual budget to the Board.

    PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCES/QUALIFICATIONS
    The new President & CEO will be a seasoned leader with a demonstrated passion for the Mill Neck Family of Organization’s mission. The executive will be highly motivated, a visionary, and an inspiring leader. Candidates should possess at least ten years of successful leadership experience in a complex organization.

    Desired qualities and background include:
    o Proven passion for ministering to the Deaf or Hard of Hearing, or similar experience in a nonprofit organization setting.
    o Strong leadership abilities and strategic thinking to create, plan, share, and implement the organization’s vision. Ability to turn strategy into concrete action plans, and to influence and motivate others toward reaching organizational goals.
    o Entrepreneurial orientation with a track record of innovation and thought leadership to recognize future trends and capitalize on new opportunities.
    o Politically savvy; experience building and sustaining relationships with many constituencies, both internal and external.
    o Collaborative leader who fosters teamwork and who attracts, develops, recognizes, and retains top talent.
    o Experience in many, if not all, the chief executive officer functions, including interfacing with a board of directors, managing a major budgetary function, contract management, technology, program delivery and participating in resource development and public relations.
    o Knowledge of state laws and international regulations pertaining to serving Deaf or Hard of Hearing individuals or an ability to become well versed quickly.
    o Unquestionable ethics and integrity.
    o Candidate preferably be an active in a Christian congregation consistent with the Apostles Creed or be open to working within a faith-based organization setting.
    o Fluency in American Sign Language is a plus or the candidate must have willingness to learn.

    EDUCATION
    An undergraduate degree is required; an advanced degree in Education, Deaf Education, Ministry, Business Administration or related field is preferred.

    COMPENSATION
    A comprehensive, competitive compensation and benefits package will be offered to the successful candidate, including housing on the Mill Neck Estate (if desired).
