Ascension is a parish of about 60 households worshiping in a small 1889 chapel in Portland Heights. We are traditional but far from old-fashioned, using Rite I liturgy for all our services and nurturing a warm and friendly community where all are welcome. We are looking for a 1/3 time rector to pastor our 60 households and lead us into the future.
Sunday worship, preaching and Eucharist, is the cornerstone of our life together. We are seeking a rector who will serve as principal preacher and celebrant for Sunday Eucharist at 8AM and 10 AM, and at special services such as Ash Wednesday and Holy Week services. Someone who is fluent with traditional language, liturgy, and music would be a gift to us.
Because of our small size, most members according to their gifts have one or more active ministries in our operations, programs, and missions. Each person is essential to the life of the parish. Our priest should be a good communicator, outgoing and friendly, with a warm and open style for parishioners and newcomers alike. Because we have long had a part time and bivocational priest as well as a parish administrator, we have highly functional lay led day to day ministries. Our priest should be able capably both to inspire and to guide lay leadership within the church, and to help newcomers find opportunities for service.
Our rector should gently guide a vision for the future. One concern will be, as with any parish, growth (or re-growth.) Prior to the pandemic our parish was seeing steady growth, due to “strong fundamentals:” effective preaching of the gospel, a warm and caring community, regular social events, beautiful music, committed liturgy, and a successful Christian education program for children. Our new rector will need to help us determine how we can build on this foundation regardless of where the pandemic takes us. A second special effort will be pulling together our variety of different outreach efforts into a more coordinated whole.
The successful candidate will be a strong preacher and celebrant of traditional liturgy, a warm, sensitive, and outgoing pastor, and a capable inspiration to lay ministry.
