    Job Description

    PARISH DESCRIPTION
Calvary is a vibrant, eclectic downtown congregation. We are a community grounded in the gospel of grace through our common liturgical life, shaped by the Book of Common Prayer and committed to “making God’s love visible in downtown Memphis.” With a long and deep history of community outreach ministry, Calvary cares deeply about the needs and opportunities in our neighborhood, our city and God’s creation. And we are committed to living into the gospel mandate that we welcome the stranger — the one who is different, strange to us, foreign — as if that person were Christ himself.

    POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Director of Youth Ministry will be primarily responsible for overseeing and building programs for Calvary’s youth, working directly with youth and their families. She or he will need to be grounded in the ethos and worship of the Episcopal Church, spiritually mature, emotionally grounded, and able to love and mentor young people in their Christian life, regardless of race, class, sexual orientation, political affiliation or any of the categories or identities that can tend to divide us.

The responsibilities of our next Youth Director (YD) will be in service of forming a healthy and loving Christian community of young people and their families and integrating these people into the broader life of Calvary. Specifically, they are to include:

    • Oversight and administration of weekly Christian Formation classes and activities for grades 6-12, coordinating with the director of children and family ministry and associate rector for formation. With other recruited adults, YD
will teach the Sunday morning class for high schoolers and lead fellowship activities mid-week.

    • Active support for and involvement in the lives of Calvary’s youth outside the church. This may include attending meaningful events such as recitals, concerts, sports games, etc.

    • Assist in preparing youth for Confirmation in coordination with clergy staff.

    • Direction of Episcopal Youth Community (EYC) and fellowship opportunities for young people.

    • Participation and leadership in the broader diocesan youth community, including events such as Happening, service trips, neighborhood outreach, etc.

    • Recruitment and support of volunteers in areas specified above.

    • Management of program budget and supplies.

    • Collaborate with the director of communications to promote events effectively.

    • Effective planning for the future of the program.

    • Participation in the overall work of the Calvary Church staff, attendance at staff meetings, maintenance of regular office hours, and occasional involvement in liturgy planning.

    • Continuing education in field.

    POSSIBLE ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Young Adult Ministry: Establish and nurture ministry to Calvary’s members in their 20s and 30s, forming community, assessing needs and gifts and programming in light of what is learned.

    • Parish Fellowship: Work with Calvary staff to assess opportunities to deepen relationships within the parish across generations and demographic differences by planning and offering fellowship events throughout the year.

    • Other emphases not listed above may arise from gifts and interests of the particular candidate. These may become part of the position description in consultation with the rector.

    REQUIREMENTS
    • Previous experience in youth ministry in a parish setting or compelling alternative. Experience in both teaching and administration is preferred.

    • Background check. Training sessions for Safeguarding God’s People (sexual misconduct responsibility) and Anti-racism training.

    HOURS AND COMPENSATION
    • 20 – 40 hours per week, depending on scope of agreed-upon job description. Days on site are to be determined but must include Sundays, Tuesdays and Wednesday evenings. Summer hours and other commitments are to be
agreed upon by YD, associate Rector for formation, and rector.

    • Reports to associate rector for formation.

    • Full benefits provided at 1500 hours/year, including single health insurance according to Calvary Employee Guidelines, pension contribution, and 4 weeks paid vacation.

    SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Please submit cover letter and resume to the Rev. Katherine Bush by email.
